Just saw the Lego movie. I can totally see why it's getting in the 90's for both audiences and critics on RottenTomatoes.

The combination of stop motion and CG was really well done in this movie. There was never a part of the movie where I thought, "That looks bad" or "They could have done that better". The sets they built for it were made almost completely from Lego bricks, and there were a lot of details that you could look through. They especially did a good job of using the Lego to simulate fire, smoke, water, and bubbles. When they showed up on screen, you could instantly tell what it was supposed to be. I especially liked the use of lightsaber blades as blaster fire. Oh, and they way they had the female's hair rotate on her head as if it was waving in the breeze was pure genius.
There were a lot of jokes in this film. There were plenty for the kids to laugh at, and just as many for the adults to laugh at. There were a number of references to other movies, as well as to various Lego sets and themes that people remember. One of my favorite little tid bits that they added was with the 1980something space man, where the bottom of his helmet was cracked in the way you would expect from helmet pieces as they get old and used. And apparently, there was a Simpsons Lego set at some point, as a Milhouse minifigure made an appearance.
The plot was fairly lighthearted, with a couple serious moments when it came to romance, though even those were kinda silly with little Lego people doing it. I'm not sure why people keep saying the movie is about how corporations are bad, since the only reference to business is the antagonist's name. Nothing else about business was brought up. It was all about how Lego isn't about following instructions that someone else gave you, but about building the stuff you imagine, which is the way Lego is meant to be played spoiler(which is why I get mad when people say Lego only puts out sets made for boys. Come on people, use your imagination). I especially liked the final big battle between the good guys and the bad guys, where all the good guys' ships were made from pieces of whatever they had around them. It's pretty hilarious seeing a ship made of castle pieces flying around next to an ice cream truck ship. Oh, and that giant construction-piece mech was so freakin' cool!
I really recommend this movie to people looking for a lighthearted flik that will bring out your inner child, and maybe inspire you to get to creating something amazing.
