It should bother you, especially with what is going on today. It is not so hard to watch because the acting is theatrical with a considerable amount of narration rather then filmed "real" which takes off enough of the edge. If Kubrick had filmed it straight it would have been too horrifying to watch - the brilliance of Kubrick. Of the 5 movies I listed the Handmaid's Tale is the most difficult to watch because it is filmed straight - not over acted - there is no humor in the film.
