Emmy isn't Mary's name Marnie? I have seen so many posts about her on reddit saying that her name is Marnie and not Mary. I am not sure if the info is correct. If someone who has played the game can pls confirm her name.

Nope. As I have said previously, we use the original names and not the names used for the English version of the game.

Yeah, which is why I am so confused why her named changed so drastically for the English version. From a perfectly English name of "Mary" to...Marnie.

Heck, even websites cannot agree on the name's origin, is it Hebrew? Latin? Greek? Scottish? And it's meaning includes "From the Sea" or "Rejoice". The later is what I believe they were looking for though given Team Yell's role in Sword and Shield.

Meanwhile Mary origins are also not entirely known, could be English, German, Hebrew...just to name a few. Though, most seem to believe it is of English origins. And it can mean things such as "From the Sea", "Child of the Sea", "Good Child", "Bitter", "Beloved", "Kind and Cool". Though, in truth, all this info is rather...disconnected from each other depending on the site you go to.

But, yeah, I will never understand that change in name. It's not like they went from a Japanese name to English name (or a name English speaking people would connect better with), such as, Satoshi to Ash. No, they went from a perfectly normal name English speaking people are used to and changed it to something that is rather unknown, except the one time during the 1970s where it gains some popularity due to Alfred Hitchcock.

This is one thing that has bugged me for a long while.
Marnie is probably to fit in better with the US market. It's far from the most bizare or crazy name change made for a game from Japan when it moved to USA market.

Mary has a far larger popularity in the US market than the rather unknown Marnie though, so, that would not be the case.

For example, last year, Mary was the 124th most popular name given at birth while Marnie was 908th.
I had it the other way around. I thought that Mary was the English version name and Marnie was the Japanese version name, hence the original concern.
What I hate about the SWSH changes in particular is that it COMPLETELY ruins the plant based names the game has going on.

It doesn't have to make statistical sense, only Managment sense. Look at the history of Street Fighter name changes.
